Ahoi Ashtami is an Indian festival (commonly pronounced as “Hoi Ashtami”) which shows the bond between children and mother and makes it more strong.

We all know that the relation of a mother with her children is so reliable and true and for keep following and believing this relation, mothers do a long day fast for her children on this day.

Ahoi Ashtami (festival) falls in the month of Kartik on the 8th day of full moon and 4th day after Karwa Chauth, usually in October – November. This festival is so similar to Karwa Chauth but not totally.

Rituals and Other Important Considerations

Married women do a long day fast that get begins before the sunrise and ends at evening, only after worshipping the Goddess Ahoi (a form of Maa Durga) and star watching.

This fast is followed by painting the picture of Goddess Ahoi on the wall and names of all the children are being written along with the picture with the help of red color.

A bowl of water is placed before it and moli (a red colored thread) is tied around it.  So many sweets and dishes including puris, halwa, chana, jawar, kheer, and other food items are being made. The dishes may get vary depending on the lives and culture of different places.

There is one more thing to be also done during the daytime that is of storytelling. Mothers hear the story of Ahoi Ashtami that is to be narrated by someone or can be read by themselves own. In the evening, the goddess is worshipped along with all the children and other family members by offering those dishes and sweets and prays for the long life and success of her children.

After worshipping the goddess, starts are being watched and water is offered to them using karwa or a pitcher. As the fast ends, those dishes and sweets are distributed among children and others.

This festival really means a lot for a mother as she has the warmth of one of the most important and true relationship.

Karwa Chauth or Karva Chauth strengthens forever kinda love in each other

“Karwa Chauth or Karva Chauth” is one of the most awaited festivals of married Hindu women. The festival is celebrated in almost every state of India. It falls in the month of Kartik of Hindu calendar which gets begin from Purnima (the full moon day) that comes after few days of Dussehra.

Basically, karwa means “Pot” and chauth means the “fourth – day”; and so the day is called Karwa Chauth. This year (2018), it is on 27th October 2018 i.e., Saturday.

On this day, married women keep fast for their husbands to have a long life, prosperity, healthy life. It is a difficult fast that is done by all married Hindu women. The fast begins before the sunrise and ends only after worshipping the moon. Jewelry, clothes, sweets and gifts are received from both women’s in-laws and mother known as “sargi”.

They get dressed properly like a bride again. Usually, they wear red or a pink colored saree as it resembles the sign of a married lady. Newly brides wear their wedding costumes. Women enjoy at their best on this day.

Once during the whole day, women keeping fast need to hear the story of the Karwa Chauth, which is supposed to be narrated by some elder lady.

During the ritual, they keep a karwa (a pot made up of mud) with them, filled with water and offer it to the Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. After hearing the story, the ladies can intake water.

The fast does not end until the full moon is seen. The women wear a chunri on their head at the time of worship. They watch the moon using a sieve (an ordinary tool used in the kitchen to clean grains) and perform all rituals.

The pooja is done in different ways depending on the region where they. They offer water to the moon using that karwa and break their fast by taking a sip of water.
