Guru Nanak: His Deeds, His Actions, His Contribution, It’s all an Inspiration

Recall those words said by Guru Nanak Ji, “Death would not be called bad, O people, if one knew how to truly die.” So rightly said and so rightly done. Isn’t it? There have been many legends which we all remember sometimes or the other in life talking about their greet deeds, their unforgettable contribution to the way we all are today and making this world a better place and one such person who has not only laid the foundation of Sikhism but has also brought peace, justice and brotherhood in the nation is Guru Nanak who was one of the ten Sikh Gurus.

His birth anniversary is celebrated worldwide as Guru Nanak Gurupurab or Guru Nanak Jayanti on Kartik Poornamashi, the full moon day in the month of Kartik i.e. October-November.

People though widely celebrate this auspicious festival but know less about his deeds and significance. The lesser known things talked about is how he travelled the world trying to tell and teach people that there is only one God who is eternal and omnipresent and is present in every one of his creations including humans.

The celebrations are done for three days straight where devotees do their best by visiting to Gurudwaras, putting Langars as in distributing food to as many people as they can and decorate their houses to bring happiness and positivity around them. This festival is not only meant to celebrate his birth anniversary but also to recall his teachings and his path of peace and harmony in order to lead a life full of love and joy.

Day, Dates and Prayers

This year this festival lies on 23rd of November, the day of Kartik Poornamashi according to Hindu Lunar calendar. Though the celebration would begin on November 22 around 12:53 pm because it is an auspicious time for the festival and shall continue till November 24.

Gurudwaras read Akhand Path which is a non-stop reading of Guru Granth Sahib for 48 hours straight which starts two-days prior to the festival. Holy prayers are sung, and devotees eat and also organize langars for people.
